How to Estimate Your Cloud Carbon Footprint

Cloud computing accounts for 2–3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. For SMEs using AWS, Azure, or GCP, understanding your cloud CO₂ footprint is the first step toward meaningful ESG reporting. This free, browser-based tool converts your monthly cloud bill into estimated annual CO₂ tonnes — no signup, no data sent to any server.

  1. Select your cloud provider

Choose AWS, Azure, or GCP from the dropdown. Each provider has a different average carbon intensity based on their global infrastructure mix and renewable energy commitments.

  2. Enter your monthly cloud bill

Type your average monthly spend in USD. Use your cloud console billing dashboard for an accurate figure. The estimate scales linearly with spend.

  3. Read and export your estimate

Your estimated annual CO₂ output in metric tonnes appears instantly. Use the Standard estimate level for ESG reports, or switch to Low / High to show optimistic and conservative bounds.

FAQ

How accurate is the cloud carbon estimate?
The estimate is an approximation based on industry-average emission factors from the Cloud Carbon Footprint project (2024 data). It is suitable for directional ESG reporting but not for ISO 14064-certified accounting. For certified reporting, obtain vendor-specific Scope 3 data from your cloud provider.
Is my billing data uploaded anywhere?
No. All calculations happen instantly in your browser using JavaScript. Your billing figures are never sent to any server, stored in a database, or shared with third parties.
What does the estimate level setting mean?
Low (optimistic) includes only operational emissions assuming a clean energy mix. Standard adds partial embodied carbon from hardware manufacturing — this is the recommended level for SME ESG reports. High includes full lifecycle carbon for a conservative upper bound.
Can I use this result for our annual sustainability report?
Yes, with the caveat that you disclose the methodology — browser-based estimate using Cloud Carbon Footprint project factors. For audited GHG reports, supplement with vendor-issued Scope 3 data.
